Orthodontic treatment is a real investment, so it makes sense to ask: does insurance cover braces and Invisalign? For many families the answer is yes — at least in part. Here is how orthodontic benefits work in 2026 and how to get the most from yours.
The short answer
If your dental plan includes orthodontic benefits, it typically pays about 50% of the cost of braces or aligners, up to a lifetime maximum that usually ranges from $1,000 to $3,000 per person. Not every plan includes orthodontics, so the first step is always to check your specific policy — something our team is happy to do for you.
How the lifetime maximum works
Unlike your annual dental maximum, the orthodontic lifetime maximum is the total your plan will ever contribute toward orthodontic care for a given patient. It does not reset each year, so once it is used, it is used. That is why it helps to plan treatment around it.
Is Invisalign covered like braces?
Increasingly, yes. Many modern plans now cover Invisalign and other clear aligners at the same rate as traditional braces. Some older or more basic plans still treat aligners as cosmetic and limit the benefit, so it is worth confirming before you start.
Kids vs. adults
Some plans only cover orthodontics for dependents under 18 or 19. Others extend benefits to adults. If you are an adult considering treatment, don’t assume you are excluded — check the plan language or ask us to verify.
Waiting periods
Many plans have a 6 to 12 month waiting period before orthodontic benefits begin. Some waive it if you can document prior continuous dental coverage, so keep your records handy.
FSA and HSA accounts
Even without orthodontic insurance, pre-tax accounts stretch your budget. The IRS lists braces and orthodontic care as a qualified medical expense, so both FSAs and HSAs apply. For 2026 the contribution limits are $4,400 for an individual HSA, $8,750 for a family HSA, and $3,400 for an FSA. HSA balances roll over year to year, which is ideal for multi-year treatment, while FSAs are generally use-it-or-lose-it.
